Malaysia plans 500-MW solar tender in early 2019 – report

November 19 (Solar) – Malaysia is expected to launch a 500-MW solar power tender in January, The Start reports, citing a government official.

This will be the third round of Malaysia’s Large Scale Solar (LSS) programme, as announced by Yeo Bee Yin, the country’s Minister of Energy, Technology, Science, Climate Change and Environment.

The latest LSS tender is in addition to 958 MW of photovoltaic (PV) projects to be realised by 2020 in support of Malaysia's 20% renewable energy target. Speaking during a question session last week, the minister has said the country would need to deploy some 3,991 MW of additional renewable energy capacity to achieve the goal.

During the previous round of the LSS programme in December 2017, a total of 563 MW of projects were awarded, exceeding the targeted capacity of 460 MW.

Next year, Malaysia is also expected to launch 114 MW of renewable energy facilities under its feed-in-tariff (FiT) scheme, including 74 MW of small-scale hydropower plants, 10 MW of biomass and 30 MW of biogas plants.
