November 13 (Solar) – Construction of the 25-MW/50-MWh Tesla powerpack battery has been completed at the 50-MW Gannawarra solar park in Victoria, it was announced on Monday.
The Gannnawarra Energy Storage System (GESS) is owned by Edify Energy and Wirsol Energy Ltd, part of Germany's Wircon. In a press release on Monday, Wirsol said that the construction of the battery storage facility was completed ahead of schedule, while its Gannawarra solar park has passed all commissioning tests and is now operating at full capacity.
The solar park, with a Direct Current (DC) capacity of 60 MW, was connected to the grid in April. The Tesla Powerpack battery that will be linked to it will be the first storage system retrofitted to an existing solar farm, according to the press release.
Separately, Wirsol said it has produced first power from its 110 MW DC Wemen solar park in Victoria, expecting full commissioning by end-2018. With its 319,000 photovoltaic (PV) modules, the plant is seen to be the largest one of its kind in Victoria.
All of these projects will contribute to the state’s target to produce 25% of its electricity from renewables by 2020 and 40% by 2025, Wirsol said.
