EDF Renewables seals PPAs for 128-MW solar-plus-storage project in California

November 9 (Solar) – EDF Renewables North America has inked power purchase agreements (PPAs) with two parties for the output of a 128-MW solar-plus-storage project in Kern County, California.

Under the terms of the 20-year deals, Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE) will buy 55% of the electricity generated by the Big Beau Solar+Storage Project, while Monterey Bay Community Power (MBCP) will purchase the remaining portion. The two Community Choice Aggregators (CCAs) teamed up in September 2017 to launch a competitive procurement process in order to make use of economies of scale for the combined four-county service territory, the announcement says.

The Big Beau plant is expected to enter commercial operation by the end of 2021. It will feature a 40-MW/160-MWh battery storage component.

"The inclusion of storage provides the agencies with a 100% clean and partially dispatchable product, allowing them to mitigate the ‘duck curve’ risk and monetize price spikes,” explained Valerie Barros, director of renewables and storage product development at EDF Renewables.
