TVA unveils 377-MW solar deal for Facebook's Alabama data centre

November 6 (Solar) – The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) on Friday announced a deal with two developers to build 377 MW of solar parks and power Facebook Inc’s (NASDAQ:FB) data centre in Huntsville, Alabama.

The photovoltaic (PV) plants will be installed in Tennessee and Alabama and will have capacities of 150 MW and 227 MW, respectively. The output of the facilities will be used to supply with 100% renewable electricity Facebook’s Alabama data centre amid the social networking giant’s ambitions to power its global operations entirely with renewables by 2020.

Under the deal, First Solar Inc (NASDAQ:FSLR) will install a 227-MW PV park in Alabama’s Colbert County, while the 150 MW of additional power will come from a plant by NextEra Energy Resources, to be located in Tennessee’s Lincoln County. Both developers took part in TVA’s competitive selection, held last year, seeking proposals for large-scale projects to supply Facebook.

Federally-owned TVA, which is the largest public power utility in the US, noted it plans to invest USD 8 billion (EUR 7bn) in renewable energy over the next 20 years.
