Non-hydro renewables reach 20.5% share in Italy's 9-mo power

October 6 (Solar) – Italy’s wind, solar, biomass and geothermal power plants met over 20.45% of the country’s electricity demand in the first nine months of 2018, shows data by power grid operator Terna SpA (BIT:TRN).

This compares to a share of 21% in the same period of 2017, when solar parks produced more power, while demand was slightly lower.

When hydropower is added to the calculation, the total renewables share for January-September 2018 reaches 36.3%. The share of thermal power plants was a bit over 50%. More details are available in the table.

(figures in TWh) September 2018 Jan- Sept 2018 Jan- Sept 2017
Electricity demand 27.01 242.18 240.7
Hydro 3.4 38.36 31
Solar PV 2.35 19.45 20.4
Wind power 0.95 12.6 12.5
Biomass 1.43 13.2 13.4
Geothermal power 0.46 4.3 4.4

In September alone, Italy’s renewable energy-based power plants produced enough to meet 32% of demand. Their share decreased by 2 percentage points from September 2017.
