Texas battery storage project by Luminant gets USD-1m grant by state

November 5 (Solar) – Texas-based electric utility Luminant has been awarded by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality a USD-1-million (EUR 0.88m) grant for a 10-MW/42-MWh battery storage project, it was announced last week.

Located near McCamey in Upton County, Texas, the Upton 2 lithium-ion energy storage system will be installed at the 180-MW Upton 2 Solar Power Plant — the largest operating photovoltaic (PV) park in Texas, Luminant, a subsidiary of Vistra Energy Corp (NYSE:VST) said. The storage system is designed to capture excess solar energy generated during the day and release it when demand rises in late afternoon and early evening.

Upon completion, the Upton 2 battery storage facility will be the largest in the state. It is expected to be operational in late 2018.

The New Technology Implementation Grant programme, supporting this energy storage project, is a part of the Texas Emissions Reduction Plan.
