Germany's 8 GW of wind, solar tenders to take place in 2019-2021

November 2 (Solar) – The German government’s plan to quickly implement additional tenders for onshore wind and solar power, of 4 GW for each technology, will spill into 2021, it became clear this week.

Previously it was announced that half of the auction capacity would come in 2019 and the other half in 2020, but a different schedule has now been presented. According to it, next year there would be tenders for 1 GW wind and 1 GW solar, followed by 1.4 GW of each tendered in 2020, and then 1.6 GW of each in 2021.

Germany will also hold technology-neutral tenders with innovative remuneration models. These are to award 250 MW in 2019, 400 MW in 2020, and then 500 MW in 2021.

In mid-2018 it was revealed that Germany would widely miss its 2020 goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 40% on 1990 levels. The Climate Protection Report by the government at the time forecast a reduction of only 32%.

The Merkel's grand coalition recently agreed to pursue a 65% renewables target for 2030, up from a share of about 36% in the first half of 2018. The start of work on a plan for reaching the 2030 goal has been postponed for next autumn.
