Volvo factory in Belgium goes solar

October 8 (Solar) – Volvo Cars last week said that 15,000 solar panels have been installed at its car factory in Ghent, Belgium, marking the first solar array at the company's global manufacturing operations.

The installation is part of the company's efforts towards climate-neutral global manufacturing operations by 2025.

The electricity supply for all Volvo Cars' plants in Europe has been sourced from renewables since 2008, the company noted.

The plant in Ghent already uses wind power to meet some 11% of its power demand, and in 2016 deployed a heating system that cut carbon emissions by 40%.

In 2017, Volvo Cars committed to electrify all new Volvo cars launched after 2019 and this year it set a target for fully electric cars to account for 50% of its global sales by 2025.
