Abattoir with 78-MW solar farm to be built in Queensland

October 1 (Solar) – Queensland's independent Coordinator-General has approved the development application for an abattoir project in Gladstone that includes a 78-MW solar park, the state government said on Friday.

The development approval for Asia Pacific Agri-Corp's AUD-308-million (USD 222m/EUR 192m) project provides for 78 MW of solar panels to be located on 95 hectares (234.8 acres) of land, said Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick. They will be able to meet almost one third of the site's electricity consumption.

In addition, there will be an on-site 33-MW hydrogen plant that will service the abattoir's boiler.

The abattoir, which will have a capacity to process 2,400 head of cattle per day, will create 308 construction and 335 operational jobs.

Subject to securing subsequent approvals, the project is expected to break ground around May 2019, with the start of operations envisaged by 2021.
