Renewables in US meet almost 11.8% of demand in H1

September 28 (Solar) – The US’ renewable power plants, including hydropower, were responsible for 13.05% of the country’s domestic generation and covered 11.76% of consumption in the first half of 2018, SUN DAY Campaign said on Thursday.

The contribution of renewables is down from 13.61% and 11.97%, respectively, in the first six moths of 2017 as the use of fossil fuels increased. Analysing data by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), the non-profit research organisation said that the output of renewables plants climbed by 3.17%, while consumption rose by 2.54%. Hydropower registered a 7% year-on-year drop in generation but was still the top renewable energy source with a share of 24.85%.

US' top renewable energy sources Share in %
Hydropower 24.85
Wind 23.37
Biomass 22.73
Biofuels 19.44
Solar 7.86
Geothermal 1.76

Non-hydro renewable energy facilities lifted their output by 7.04% to the record 4.530 quadrillion Btu, with the largest increase coming from solar parks. Solar output was 25.4% higher, while wind recorded an 11.2% increase in generation.

Overall, non-hydro renewables accounted for 9.8% of the US’ total power output in the six months.
