All aboard for another 26 ebuses as BYD announces latest sales

Chinese EV maker BYD passes the 600-sales mark in Europe with a deal – announced at the International Motor Show – which also takes it past 100 sales in Scandinavia, and more than 35,000 worldwide.

Chinese EV maker BYD today announced it has passed 600 ebus sales in Europe by securing a 23-vehicle order from Scandinavian bus operator Nobina.

The deal takes the Xi’an, Shaanxi-based electric vehicle maker past the 100 sales mark in Scandinavia with the buses to operate on three routes in southwest Sweden, and was announced at the Commercial Vehicles portion of the IAA (Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung) International Motor Show, which opened in Hannover, Germany today, and runs until next Thursday.

Nobina will next summer take receipt of 11 of BYD’s 12-meter ebuses, for the city of Lidkoping; 10 of its 18m, articulated vehicles, which will run in Boras; and five 8.7m “midi” buses for the city of Ale. The new all-electric vehicles will run on routes controlled by Västtrafik, the public bus company for the county of Västra Götaland.

New plant in France will assemble artic models

In a separate press statement released by the Chinese company today, for the motor show’s opening day, BYD reiterated its position as world leader in the segment, with more than 35,000 of its ebuses shipped worldwide.

The newly-ordered 12m vehicles will be manufactured in BYD’s factory in Komarom, Hungary, which has been operational since April 2017, and the articulated models will undergo final assembly at a plant in Beauvais, France, which BYD says will be commissioned within a month.

The midi buses ordered by Nobina will be the first such models shipped to Scandinavia after previous orders from the Netherlands and Italy, and the articulated vehicles make up the second order shipped to Scandinavia, following a 44-bus purchase by Nobina for use in Norway.

BYD released no details of the value of the 26-bus supply deal.

Announcing the order, Isbrand Ho, Managing Director of BYD Europe, said: “Scandinavia has become the fastest growing market for BYD in Europe and is a remarkable success story, particularly given both the tough climatic conditions and the strong competitors. With these new orders won for [more than] 100 ebuses in 2018 so far, needless to say … we are delighted with our progress not only commercially but in support of improving air quality in the [Nordic nations].”
