The 5.5 MW facility was built by power company Göteborg Energi. The solar plant, in Säve, near Gothenburg, is intended to increase the utility’s generation capacity from renewable sources.
Swedish-Swiss engineering multinational ABB has started construction on a 5.5 MW solar project in Säve, near Gothenburg for which it is providing a substation with switchgear, distribution transformers and relays, together with control equipment and inverters.
The solar facility, which is being built by utility Göteborg Energi, is intended to increase the company’s renewable energy portfolio. “With our investment, we increase the production of renewable electricity and take another step towards a renewable energy system,” said Alf Engqvist, Managing Director at Göteborg Energi.
The solar park is expected to be grid connected in November, ABB said in a statement. The project was announced alongside another 1 MW solar initiative by Göteborg Energi in June. At the time the utility revealed the 5.5 MW plant in Säve was set for the northern part of an airfield, in an area owned by industrial group Serneke, which will also buy part of the energy produced. “Serneke has also reserved additional land alongside Göteborg Energi’s solar cell park for the purpose of expanding the solar cell facility, although in that case, under its own initiative,” the company added.
The second solar park is planned for Gårdsten, and will provide energy to people with no opportunity of deploying solar on their rooftops.
In June Johan Lindahl, spokesperson for the Swedish Solar Association, revealed there are several operational and under development MW-sized solar parks with a combined capacity of around 30 MW in the Nordic nation.
That portfolio amounts to 13 initiatives – including the two Göteborg Energi projects – with installations from 0.8 MW to 7 MW in scale, and developed by local municipality-owned utilities including Kalmar, Luleå, Falu, Trollhättan and Lidkoping.
