Renewables bring 33.8% of Spain's power in August

September 12 (Solar) – Renewable energy sources accounted for 33.8% of Spain’s power generation in August, up 14.4% in annual terms, shows data by grid operator Red Electrica de Espana (REE).

Although their output fell by 7.4% year-on-year, wind farms were the top source of renewables electricity last month, producing 14.5% of the country’s total power. Solar photovoltaic (PV) and thermal power plants reached a share of 7.5%, according to provisional statistics released on Monday by REE.

Nuclear power plants were Spain's leading source of electricity with a share of 24.4%.

Thanks to more favourable weather conditions, especially when compared to the extremely dry 2017 in Spain, hydropower generation this August jumped by 94.4% on a yearly basis and accounted for 10% of the total production.

Demand for electricity in August stood at 22,095 GWh, the highest level reached in the past 10 years due to abnormally high temperatures. Demand has grown 1.3% as compared to August 2017.
