Portugal okays 145.5 MW of unsubsidised PV projects

August 20 (Solar) – Portugal's government said today it has approved three photovoltaic (PV) projects with 145.5 MW of combined solar capacity, all of which will be implemented in the municipality of Santarem.

Local firm Escalabis Solar, the developer of the schemes, has estimated the total investment to be about EUR 81 million (USD 92.5m). The Alforgemel, Casal do Paul and Encarnado solar plants, as they are named, will each have an individual capacity of 48.5 MW and be comprised of 160,000 solar panels.

The three PV projects will not receive feed-in tariffs (FiTs). The country has given the go-ahead to more than 1,000 MW of unsubsidised solar energy projects, the Secretary of State for Energy, Jorge Seguro Sanches, said.

Portugal aims at having 31% of its energy consumption being met by renewables by 2020.
