Italian PV market registers 18% YOY drop in H1 2018

Despite recent announcements for large-scale solar projects across Italy, the country has seen just residential and C&I projects come online in 2018. Meanwhile, solar has been able to cover 8% of national demand in the first half of this year.

Italy has registered a newly installed PV capacity of 36.6 MW and 37.7 MW in May and June, respectively, according to provisional numbers released by the Italian renewable energy association, Anie Rinnovabili, which are based on data provided by the country’s grid operator, Terna.

In the first half of this year, new additions totaled 191 MW, a result which is 18% lower than the 234 MW registered in the same period of 2017. This drop is mainly due to the fact that in March of last year, around 60 MW of large-scale solar parks were connected to the grid, while in the first six months of this year, no such plants have been completed, despite several announcements from local and international developers.

This year’s result, is in line with that registered in the first half of 2016, where 201 MW of new PV systems were energized. This means that, excluding the extraordinary results of March 2017, the country maintains a steady pace of growth of around 30 MW per month, which is mainly driven by the residential and C&I segments.

Anie’s numbers show quite clearly that residential installations not exceeding 20 kW in size keep dominating the Italian solar energy landscape, with around 83.5 MW of newly installed capacity.

Overall, cumulative installed PV power in Italy has reached 19.7 GW, as of the end of June 2018.

Meanwhile, Terna has reported that solar was able to generate 12,749 GWh in the first six months of this year, thus covering 8% of total power demand in Italy, while thermal power was able to cover more than 49% of total demand, with 96.780 GW.
