Food group CPF inks deal for 40-MW rooftop solar project in Thailand

July 5 (Solar) – Thai agro-industrial and food conglomerate Charoen Pokphand Foods (BKK:CPF), or CPF, will install 40 MW of solar arrays atop its manufacturing plants, thus embarking on the biggest rooftop project in Thailand.

CPF said in a press release on Tuesday that it has signed a memorandum of cooperation with local clean energy firm Gunkul Engineering that calls for the latter to fully finance the project and also design and build the solar systems. Maintenance of the facilities for 15 years is also part of the contract.

The so-called CPF Solar Rooftop project involves the construction of 34 separate photovoltaic (PV) plants for self-consumption at a total cost of THB 1.4 billion (USD 42m/EUR 36m). A total of 120,000 PV cells will be mounted on the rooftop spaces of CPF’s business units livestock, aquaculture, food processing and ready-to-eat meal plants. The output of the systems will help save around 28,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

The project is part of CPF’s sustainability efforts through generating electricity for self-consumption.
