Veolia launches Europe's 1st PV recycling facility in France

June 27 (Solar) – French water, waste and energy management company Veolia Environnement SA (EPA:VIE) has inaugurated a plant for recycling photovoltaic (PV) panels in Rousset, France, Reuters reported on Monday.

This is the first such dedicated plant in Europe and possibly globally, Gilles Carsuzaa, Veolia's electronics recycling head, was cited as telling reporters.

Veolia announced plans to build the plant in March last year.

Under a contract with PV Cycle France, a PV industry organisation for managing used panels, the plant will recycle 1,300 tonnes of panels this year and is expected to reach 4,000 tonnes by 2022. According to the article, Veolia wants to recycle all end-of-life solar panels in France and to build similar facilities abroad.

Reuters cited a 2016 study by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), according to which recovered materials from PV panels could be worth USD 450 million (EUR 387m) by 2030 and more than USD 15 billion by 2050.
